Effects of Oxygen via High-Flow Nasal Cannula on Adult Oropharyngeal Swallowing: A Literature Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Purpose The use of high-flow oxygen via nasal cannula has become increasingly more common in various patient populations given the multiple benefits for treating respiratory distress and failure. There is emerging, though varying research on impact delivery may have adult oropharyngeal swallowing function. purpose this literature review to outline available examine study design, investigated, findings, clinical considerations these findings. Method After an extensive online database search, we found five peer-reviewed articles specifically investigating function adults receiving (HFNC) therapy. Each article was reviewed summarized detail with close attention paid results implications. Limitations, indirectness, and/or methodologic flaws are highlighted readers' consideration. Conclusions Four prospective design studies one retrospective data analysis collection been published evaluating effects therapy swallowing. Three evaluated healthy adults; investigated acute care patients requiring HFNC. Study findings varied greatly likely due variability each study's subject population, methods. Variability make it challenging speech pathologists attempting evidence-based decision making practice. Additional nonhealthy subjects undergoing instrumental swallow while HFNC warranted.

High flow nasal cannula in children: a literature review

High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is a relatively new non-invasive ventilation therapy that seems to be well tolerated in children. Recently a marked increase in the use of HFNC has been seen both in paediatric and adult care settings. The aim of this study was to review the current knowledge of HFNC regarding mechanisms of action, safety, clinical effects and tolerance in children beyond the newb...

High Flow Nasal Cannula oxygenation for adult patients in the ICU: a literature review.

Oxygenation using High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) was initially described in neonatal medicine, but, gradually, its use has extended to adult patients. The efficacy of the device has been linked to higher flows of oxygen delivered to the patients, air tract humidification, alveolar recruitment through a positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) effect, prevention of nasopharyngeal collapse, and de...

High-Flow Nasal Cannula in a Mixed Adult ICU.

BACKGROUND Humidified, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) enables mucociliary clearance, accurate oxygen measurement, precise control of flow, and low-level positive airway pressure. There is sparse information concerning the timing of HFNC on patient outcomes such as incidence of adverse events during hospitalization, ICU stay, and post-ICU stay. METHODS This is a retrospective analysis of a het...

High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy during hypoxemic respiratory failure.

Oxygen therapy remains the first line intervention in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. Several medical devices for oxygen therapy, which range from simple nasal cannula to non-rebreathing face masks, have been used in the management of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure.1 The choice of a specific oxygen delivery device is based on the patient’s oxygen requirements in terms of flow and desi...

High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy in adults

OBJECTIVE Actively heated, humidified high flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy (HFNC) is a new type of oxygen therapy. Because of its unique physiological effects, the clinical application is becoming more and more popular. This article is to summarize the physiological effects, clinical application and short comings of HFNC. Compared with conventional oxygen therapy, HFNC helps to improve oxygen...
